TikTok Trends Are Out Of Control
From dances to filters to products… I see way too much hype with no end in sight.
Trends have always been front and center in society since the beginning of time. In the Victorian era, corsets were all the rage. In the 70s, it was disco. The 90s were all about JNCO jeans, grunge, boy bands, crimped hair, and soda shoes. (I grew up in the 90s. It was a weird, but fun decade.)
As we all know, all trends circle back after some time. That’s when they’re called vintage, retro, classic, etc.
While old trends tend to make a comeback, new trends also start. For example: TikTok started out as Musical.ly, the trending app where people danced, sang, lip-synced, or did skits for 15–60 seconds long. TikTok originally continued that… until Covid.
During Covid, people danced, did karaoke, did skits, and… did affiliate marketing. Obviously, content creation was profitable during Covid, but working-class people were turning to promoting products and services for profit when “non-essential” workers were told to stay home without pay. Once everyone was allowed to work outside the home, it wasn’t about just going back to work. They already had bills to catch up on. So they not only applied to jobs, but they also continued affiliate marketing for that second stream of income.
